Beautiful Italian cultivar. Recognised as producing one of the world’s great olives. Heavy crops early in season.

Frost hardy. Clusters of white fluffy flowers in early summer.

Frantoio makes a very good pollinator for Picual, as both produce very good yeilds under the same conditions. (inland from Whakatane).

Fruit

Medium sized oval fruit. Suitable for both table and oil production.

Nutrition

High in anti-oxidants. Olive oil reduces bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol

Cultural

Stake well to prevent wind damage. Train the tree to an open vase shape.
Olives will grow in most soil conditions providing adequate moisture is given during flowering and fruit set.

Fertilise tree in autumn and again in spring with with high nitrogen based fertiliser (Citrus). Apply 200g per tree per year and increase 200gm per year upto 2kg in total.

Once established Frantoio makes good shelter trees or hedge.
