Tamarillo

Good source of Vitamins A, B6, C and E and rich in iron and potassium. Low in calories and high in dietary fibre. This is a fast growing SELF-FERTILE tree and will grow to approximately 3.5m.

Cultural

Plant in an area protected from strong winds and heavy frosts. Remove the central growing tip when 1.5m high to encourage branching and strong growth. Repeat the process when laterals have reached 60cm.

Incorporate blood and bone at planting. Apply low nitrogen NPK fertiliser during the season. Apply in three applications - one before pruning, the second one month later and the last in February to help fruit development.

Frosts will naturally prune your tree. After the frost, remove old and dead wood. In areas of no frosts you will need to manually prune back growth to prevent overcrowding. Always remember fruit is formed on the new spring growth therefore, a hard prune will maintain desired shape, size and maximise next seasons fruit.

Fruit can sometimes have "stone cells" around the equator of the fruit. These are hard lumps in the flesh between skin and the seeds. Sometimes they can be quite sharp. This condition can vary from fruit to fruit and tree to tree.

Good nutrition and watering will help overcome this as it may be related to a nutrient imbalance within the plant. Tomatoes too have hard lumps in response to a mineral deficiency.

Cyphomandra betacea
Tamarillo Bold Gold

This fast growing tree will grow to approximately 3m. Large golden fruit with sweet and less acidic flavour than the red varieties. Will fruit within 18 months of planting.

Planting

Choose a sheltered position with protection from frost and heavy winds. Plant in spring/summer in fertile well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Water regularly over summer.

Care

Remove central growing tip once plant has reached 1m high to encourage side branching. Fruit is formed on new season growth therefore, plant can be pruned hard in spring after all risk of frost has passed.

Tamarillos are heavy feeders. Apply a complete NPK fertiliser to mature trees before spring pruning, one month later and again in February as fruit is developing.

Harvest

Harvest in autumn when full colour is reached and fruit is soft to touch
